Aquilega

Columbine

Aquilegia is one of the few perennials of which you can hardly have enough!

Old standards of Columbine and the new hybrids have a variety of colors from which to choose.  Columbines are not useful for mass planting because their flowers are rather sparse, but planting a few here and there give the garden bursts of interesting looking flowers and great color.

Columbine can live in sandy poor soil although it will grow best in good garden soil with adequate moisture.  They can be planted in full sun but a dappled shady area is best for success.

Columbine will self seed as the flowers dry.  The tiny seeds drop into the ground or get carried by the wind.  To keep your columbines from self seeding, cut off the flower head when almost dried out.
