Aronia arbutifolia

 Red Chokeberry

The red chokeberry is an upright, spreading, suckering, multi-stemmed shrub with glossy green foliage in summer and white blooms in mid-spring (April).

Plant red chokeberry in average to moist soil in full sun or part shade. If planted in a heavily shaded area the shrub will produce less flowers and fruits. Install the chokeberry in the spring when the soil is workable and water well until the plant is established.

Chokeberry is hardy in planting zones 4-9.

Varieties: Brilliantissima - a cultivar that nationally known horticulturist Michael Dirr gives a first-class rating. Its leaves are lustrous dark green and turn a brilliant scarlet in autumn; it also has abundant flowers and larger red fruit.

Excellent orange and red fall leaf color.  Orange and red leaves in fall.  Rounded, bright red fruit September-November; edible but not palatable.
