Fertilize your lawn. Let your lawn mower run completely out of gas before storing it for the winter. This will help to avoid carburetor and gas line problems next spring. Fall is a good time for planting! Plant spring bulbs, such as daffodils, tulips, hyacinth or crocus, now to ensure a great spring flower display. Trees, shrubs and sod can also be installed now along with paver patios, walkways and decks. Check and clean your gutters and downspouts. Also check your sump pump lines. If your sump pump has a battery back up, test the battery regularly and replace if needed. Disconnect and drain all hoses. Empty all flowers pots. Store hoses and pots for the winter so they will last for years. Cover outside furniture and BBQ grills. Fall Clean Ups
Now is the time to make sure your yard is in good shape for winter! By taking care of matters in the fall, your landscape will flourish next spring.
Late fall lawn and landscape tips: After removing leaves from your lawn, use them as a mulch in your garden or add them to your compost pile. Never let leaves stay on the ground throughout the fall or winter as it prevents air circulation and drainage. Leaves left on the ground too long inhibits turf growth. Keep watering your lawn if it's receiving less than 1" of water per week from rainfall. Keep mowing your lawn until the grass has stopped growing for the season. Add a layer of mulch to all of your landscape plants. Mulch will help to keep the soil temperature consistent through the winter.
Winterize your water feature. Now that it is getting darker earlier, now is a good time to replace all outside light bulbs as well as all batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Clean out the garage of old rags and debris. Mice and other small animals are looking for a winter hide out!
